Secondhand Fashion - Day Seven
10:20 PMEsther: I lied. Today is really the last day. I owe all the credit for today's fashion to my sister Liz, who got me out of my oversized hoodie, picked the earrings and did my hair for me. Got to love sisters. Without further ado (since my eyeliner has taken up permanent residence under my contacts).
Dress: Derek Heart
Earrings: Vintage
Leggings: 21 (not secondhand)
Platform heels: Bongo
Going for a ghostly shadowed look since it's late and I'm not really a fan of on camera flash lighting (although this may be worse...hard to tell). I love the color of this dress. Nuff said.
Love these shoes. The guy at the thrift store couldn't find a price tag on them, so he gave them to me for a dollar. Awesome.
The earrings really aren't this green-like (and yeah, they're out of focus), but I think you get the idea they're shimmery and lovely. Tip: if you're having a hard time getting your earrings in, dab a little neosporin on them and they will slide like a newborn baby in a bathtub (I just learned this from my sister and my life will be forever changed).
That's it folks. Happy Easter. He is Risen!
Bethany: So since we're kind of behind the program and just got home from my mom's (turkey dinner.... yum), I'm going super simple here. Most of the time, I shop secondhand never knowing what I'll find, but now with the advent of ebay and other such resources, searches can be a little more pointed. Take for example bridesmaid dresses. Worn just once, resold at 60% original cost, and everyone involved is a little bit happier. Hooray for Craigslist! It makes being in two weddings in two months (last and next) a little easier on the budget.
Bethany
Dress - David's Bridal
Shoes - Top Moda (not secondhand)
Pearls - wedding gift
Y necklace - wedding party gift
Jack
Onesie - Gerber, dyed
Longies - recycled sweater
My favorite thing about this dress is the little drape in back that doubles as an evil villain cape. Mwahahahaha.
These are my most comfortable heels, as is clear by their wear and tear. Floaty butterfly wings just about sums it up. Even scary art superhigh heels wouldn't make me tall enough for this dress, though. Anyone have tips on the best way to hem jersey?
And yes, this is the final very end. Hope you all had a great Easter weekend.
Secondhand Fashion Week- Day Six
10:28 AMEsther: Proof that this is the last day. My dress has a broken zipper and is pinned together. I should also further confess. This dress came from an odd store in Ohio that carries NWT clothing that has in some way seen better days (lacking a zipper in this case), so I guess it's not entirely thrifted, but since it's a name brand dress that I got for $2.50... I think it counts. Now I just need to fix the zipper, and maybe I'd actually wear it instead of letting it collect dust in my closet.
Tank: Herona
Dress: The Limited
Necklace: Gifted
Shoes: Charlotte Russe (hand me downs)

Bad lighting. It's very bright where I live. I should really challenge the sun to a duel with my strobe and umbrella, but I'm too lazy. Also note, Charlie's dirt goatee. (Jamie is looking at a bug? And wearing a long sleeve tee from oshkosh, target shorts and black cowboy boots...only the boots are thrifted).

I wasn't kidding about Charlie. (who is incidentally wearing a t-shirt from Guatemala, black fuzzibunz diaper, homemade baby legs, and his brown converses)
I like this necklace. It was a gift from my Nannie (grandma), but I don't often have the chance to wear it.
Shoes. How did you guys learn to walk in heels? I have to confess the art eluded me so long I finally (further confession) youtube'd runway shows and watched them over and over. Then practiced up and down my hallway for weeks until it finally clicked. Now you know.Bethany: I think I set some kind of personal record today, as we slept in so late that we had only minutes to get ready to race over to the farmer's market and then our afternoon picnic at the rosegarden we used to live by our first few years of marriage.
We did not have another lovely sunny day, so it was time to break back out one of my favorite thrift store finds, a gorgeous vintage red wool coat.
Bethany:
Coat - Bromleigh
Raglan collared shirt - Express
Ribbed flutter sleeve shirt - Kavio
Crinkle skirt - Body Central
Windowpane skirt - Rave
Striped leggings - ? (not secondhand)
Houndstooth flats - (not secondhand)
Pearls - wedding gift
Donut strand - Mommy Necklaces (not secondhand, but worn with pretty much everything these days)
Jack:
Striped polo onesie - Greendog
Overalls - Gymboree
Hat - Gap
Legwarmers - homemade from knee socks
Shoes - ? Handed down from Dad :)
You probably can't see the fashionable Wiggles band aid on my pinkie, but let me tell you, cute bandages are not made for parents. The bright and colorful addition to my finger is a pinchy-baby-fingers magnet. I think it's far safer to have an open wound than a constantly prodded one.
Of course we then came home and did yardwork and threw the probably spider-filled and definitely worm-poop covered (yay composting) clothes into the laundry (yes, I did ditch the white first).... Hope you all had a less insecty evening!
[For some reason, I thought this was the last day of Secondhand Fashion Week, so... uh... oops?]
Secondhand Fashion Week - Day Five
1:01 PMBethany:
I love dresses. Love love love dresses. Over the years, I have thrifted a ludicrous number of dresses, far more than I could ever need, so I have to make my own excuses to wear them. Because as comfy as pants and a tee shirt might be, they'll never feel as, well, prettifying as a good dress.
Anyway, seeing as I have the opposite problem as Esther when it comes to owning clothing, I had a difficult choice when it came to which dress to share this week. There is a lovely floaty polka dotted silk chiffon Express dress, a ruched and layered BCBG Max Azria. My classic Easter Ann Taylor floral linen sundress, an awesomely 50's housewife Isaac Mizrahi number. Those are just a few that come to mind... some women can't resist shoes; I can't resist dresses (and oddly enough, zip hoodies, haha).
I chose this dress:
It's altered, and it's very versatile. When I first pulled this baby off the rack, it looked like this:
Yes, uh, definitely "vintage." I'm not normally someone who can see past immediate exteriors (*blush*), but for a couple dollars I figured it was a worthwhile risk.... surely something could be done. I didn't realize that "something" would be as simple as lopping off the sleeves.
Sleeves and I have an awkward relationship. Since I have broader shoulders (as everyone is so happy to tell me), it's harder to find shirts with sleeves that attach in a way that feels natural on me. In the summer I live in sleeveless tops. In the winter I squirm my shoulders around a lot. Haha. As mentioned before, I adore 3/4 sleeves in theory, but I rarely feel comfortable wearing them.
I often wear full length velvet fingerless gloves with this dress if sleeves would be preferable. The leather gloves pictured here are secondhand also, as is the lovely capelet, which was handsewn by my husband's grandmother.
One last picture and I promise I'm done. Sometimes I think my hair functions as an extension of my personality, frizzing out wildly to remind people that even if I'm looking dressy, I'm still quite a bit rough around the edges. But remember what I said about the dress being versatile? I don't have to let my hair have the last word. Go socks.
Esther:
There is a reason I'm a photographer. I don't like being in pictures. Being in a picture is awkward-- I over think it too much (should my chin be up further? Am I smiling too wide? Not wide enough?). However taking pictures of yourself is far far worse. You have to hop, dance, smile and bat your eyelashes as if you feel completely goodnatured and charming when in fact, both your kids are dashing in and out of your pictures like whirling orangutans. In the spirit of honesty I'll confess: I took 58 pictures today and only a few don't feature blurred images of underwear clad children or a 120 lb black shepherd running by.
Yesterday I pretended I was little red riding hood in an enchanted orchard. Today I pretended I was a vintage pixie doll in Paris. I can't seem to lose the terribly self aware look, but I'm having more fun with it than I was at the beginning of the week. It was too windy outside today for my tripod to stay up, so inside photoshoot it was. This is the only wall in the house that doesn't feature furniture, bookshelves or windows, so I'm just going to continue on pretending like that distracting gray box isn't there.
Choker- repeat from Tues
Chain- BKE
Shirt- missing tag, but still so comfy
Dress- Aqua Blue
Leggings- Forever 21 (not secondhand)
Shoes- Lela Rose (not secondhand)
I don't love dresses as much as Bethany, but I do like them...especially with leggings (which sort of became a necessity as a mom).
My cousin Heather calls this the broken doll pose (I think I need to hunch and slouch more next time though to get the full runway vibe).
"Au revoir"...I'm having too much fun.
I have a weakness for comfortable heels. I will try on every single pair I find, and then when I find some that feel like clouds on my feet... I have to by them. Whether I need them or not. These were a shocker. I had to wear them around the store for five minutes before I truly believed they were as nice to wear as they were to look at.
And I love this chain. Sadly, I rarely remember I own it.
I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here people. I think I need to go thrifting with Bethany.
Secondhand Fashion Week- Day Four
4:55 PM
Esther: Day four--whew. This is harder than I thought it was going to be, but like I told Bethany, it does prove I do indeed have stuff to wear. A week ago I was sobbing to Jim I truly did not own a stitch of respectable clothing. As a chronic thrower-away-of-things, I sent bags of rejected clothing to the thrift store a few months ago to let someone else reclaim. I do that too often for my own good and then complain about my lackluster wardrobe. Ahem.
Today's outfit comes from someone else's closet clean out-- my sister in law. She gave it to me a year ago, I wore it for awhile and then forgot it existed.
On a rainy, then sunny, then cloudy, then rainy day like today, it's the perfect fashion. I've always said wearing knit dresses with tights is more comfortable than wearing pajamas. Try it and tell me if I'm not right. I was also sporting hideous, fuzzy, barn red knee socks, but decided to spare you all-- or rather, my camera did. The battery spontaneously gave up the ghost at the sight of my hapless socks, which means no close up of the jewelry either. Ah well. Imagine that it was truly chic. (the jewelry--not the socks)
The scoop:
Necklace- BKE
Tank- Target
Dress- r.tease
Sweater- The Buckle (not secondhand)
Tights- Forever 21
Shoes- Anchor Blue (not secondhand)

I'm embarrassed to post this picture, I didn't realize my poor favorite wedges were looking so ratty. They were magical. I could and did walk miles in them without blisters or discomfort... except for Las Vegas, which is some sort of bermuda triangle for comfortable shoes.

Bethany: Knit dresses? Oh yes, they are for sure more comfortable. Sadly, on me they are cruelly unforgiving, gleefully clinging to every possible lump and bump on my short little torso. Ho hum. (I wore them shamelessly when I was pregnant, though, since lumps and bumps are par for the course then. mwahahahaha) Ah the difference a waist makes....
But, er, enough whining. This outfit is composed of an oddball assortment: a shirt in my favorite but rarely actually worn length of sleeve (more on that in a future post), a vest I originally picked up for a costume party that my friend never held (ahem, friend!), shorts I grabbed off the rack at goodwill and bought without trying on that somehow fit perfectly and fall the most flattering length for my particular thighs (trust me, this is as good as it gets). Layering socks, short and comfy boots, and jewelry that Jack managed to break before we left the house.
Plotting more mayhem I'm sure.
The disheveled railroad tracks by our house definitely appeal to the secret steampunk daydreamer in me. If it weren't for the rather less romantic rubbish and trashy-but-not-quite-artistically-grungy buildings in the background, it'd be the perfect place for a photoshoot.
Jack
Jacket - OshKosh
Turtleneck onesie - Gap
Longies - recycled sweater
Cloth diaper - Goodmama
Shoes - ABG Baby (not secondhand)
Bethany
Crochet trimmed 3/4 sleeve shirt - Express
Velvet vest - Casual Corner
Plaid shorts - Fox Girls
Thigh high socks - ? (not secondhand)
Jewelry - County Fair and Forever 21 (not secondhand)
Boots - Al Primo
Can it possibly be warmer on this side of the state? Unbelievable! Not that it's apparent from my pictures, but we actually have blue skies with pretty little white puffs of clouds flitting here and there. My dad and brother dropped by for lunch, and I dragged them out to take pictures. Ah, it's nice to have a variation from repetitively framed self portraits.
Secondhand Fashion Week - Day Three
2:24 PMBethany:
Ok, so I was good yesterday and posted something more casual, but for today I'm thinking more frou frou. It is fashion week after all, right?
This skirt must be magic, because somehow it's a one size fits all. What? That's right; it faithfully stayed with me through nine months of pregnancy + good old postpartum, and it still fits as perfectly as the day I tried it on in the goodwill dressing room years ago and wayyy pre-baby.
The same cannot be said for the lovely lace top, which is only now fitting again as my measurements recede back to what they were before becoming devoted servants to a hungry baby.
Two entirely secondhand outfits:
Bethany
Hat - Eva Mae Modes
Lace overlay shirt - Papaya Clothing
Cameo broach - Gerry's
Jack
Skirt - Ann Ferriday
Angora sweater - ? no tags
High heel oxfords - Bongo
Suitcoat - Lullaby Club
Onesie - Gerber
Cloth diaper - Goodmama
I found these high heel oxfords the same day I stumbled upon the wedge tennies, and it was love at first sight. Esther laughed at me, because it's well known how I almost obsessively avoid lace up shoes and high heels, but even I could not resist. The next week, high heel oxfords hit all the blogs as the new fashion wonder, so I guess whoever dropped these at the goodwill was a step (harharhar) ahead of her time.
Esther:
Today FrouFrou? Gorgeous.
But for me, I hope jeans a la peanut butter works, because I barely managed to get dressed today at all. We just got home from the zoo (Wild Animal Park actually for those familiar with San Diego), where I nearly lost my mind, and my kids. They both run fast... in opposite directions, and if I could superglue them to me I would.
That combined with the wind tunnel going on outside my front door right now, I'm calling my look, "Hectic Hair Day."
Currently though, I'm locked inside my kids bedroom playing house. The pretend coffee is to die for. Pour me another cup. Very good, thank you Jamie. Why yes, I will have some hotdogs and lettuce with my coffee, how thoughtful..
As you might have noticed, I seem to have a penchant for picking up red things at the thrift store. Why I don't know, since I prefer to wear blue.
The rundown:
Red pendant necklace- Was $10 but I got it for $1 because I inadvertently found a pottery barn chair the thrift store thought had been stolen. Out of their supreme gratefulness they gave me the necklace for nearly nothing. True story.
Red wife beater- Forever 21
Sweater shirt- Charlotte Russe
Jeans- Charlotte Russe (not secondhand)
Toenail polish- Ulta...stolen from sister.
Shoes?- Who needs shoes
Extra points if you can spot the peanut butter stains on my jeans and my shirt.

Charlie:
Tshirt- Gap
Diaper- Fuzzibunz
Shoes- Converse (not secondhand unfortunately)

Secondhand Fashion Week - Day Two
11:18 AMEsther: I had a black and red outfit picked out today in honor of Bethany... Then I woke up and it was freezing outside, so I switched to a ribbed, longsleeve tee that was also red, but a bit more rugged than I was intending. One thing can throw off your whole planned outfit. Suddenly I wasn't sure if the vest worked with it anymore. I look like a gothic-bohemian-Twilighter. Where are you my Edward?
But that's the fun of this whole week right? I'm secondhanding it up baby, and trying new things.
From Top to Bottom:
Handmade choker that Charlie has broken a million times (including but not limited to today)
Homemade black pearl necklace made by me under the tutelage of my Auntie Sheri
Cozy ribbed t-shirt- The Buckle
Pinstriped vest- Wet Seal
Skinny jeans- brand unknown
Vintage red wedges- BC footwear

So here it is without the vest. I'm thinking the skinny jeans do no favors for my thighs. Bad thighs, go away.

...Ahhh. Much better.
I adore these shoes. 2 bucks, barely used at the AmVet thrift store downtown. You can see though, I am certainly doing my best to wear them out.
And here's my jewelry, plus a bonus angsty look from me. I wasn't having much success taking self portraits with the tripod and timer, so Jamie took this picture. Not bad little grasshopper. But if you don't mind, I'd like my camera back. I belong on the other side.
Bethany: For a homebody who likes to blend in and disappear into the background, I have a really really really hard time resisting, um... dramatic pieces.... and toning outfits down from including way too many of them. So this is me trying desperately to dress like a normal sane person-who-is-someone's-mother (a la classy Esther) and not a kid who wants to hold every single one of her toys at the same time. Ahem. I did try.
Bethany
Mock wrap shirt - Twenty-One
Jack
Shirt - Janie and Jack
Lace trimmed blouse - Mossimo
Skinny cords - SO
Skinny cords - SO
High top wedge tennis shoes - Lower East Side
Shirt - Janie and Jack
Jeans - Jumping Beans
Cloth diaper - Goodmama
My husband send me a link titled "Are 'Babies' the New Penguins?" so this shirt makes me chuckle now. Double the adorable goodness!
Thrifting for babies is awesome, because half the time they outgrow things before wearing holes and stuff (although the other half of the time they cover things in disgusting you-don't-wanna-know stains, hahaha).
My pants were a gift, but everything else is secondhand. The shoes baffle me; who would think that high top wedge tennis shoes would be a great idea? But they work well for short people like me.
Secondhand Fashion Week - Day One
4:48 PMWe both love thrifting. Although we've only been once together, we often regale each other with our respective tales of discovery and derring do. There were those designer maternity jeans, and that gorgeous leather jacket...
So needless to say, we were quite delighted to hear about this:

What fun! Anyone else want to join too?
Bethany:
I have not needed to go clothes shopping in a very long time (which is great when an afternoon dragging the firmly-believes-everything-is-edible toddler into dressing rooms too small for strollers doesn't sound terribly appealing... in other words, all the time these days). Living for years nearby a thrift store that routinely ran 50% off sales was great for quality over quantity people like me and not quite so great for the state of their (ahem, my) closets.
Fortunately my style hasn't changed much over the last few years. I'm still stuck in my good old color rut and layering like crazy to accommodate my finicky body temperature.
Bethany:
Velveteen jacket - SO
Mock wrap shirt - Ever Blue
Lace Layering Tank - Casual CornerPinstripe pants - Wet Seal
Gathered skirt - Speechless
Cuffs - handmade from scraps
Boots - Sketchers
Jack:

The outfit works well without the skirt. ^
Or with the skirt instead of pants (hello blinding white legs!).
(The horse is a hand-me-down too)
Esther:
Wants a pair of red boots like Bethany... and blue hair too.
Instead I dressed (or tried) in the spirit of Spring, all delicate colors that I'm told quite frequently I can't pull off, because I am a "Winter".
I stubbornly insist on attempting it anyway.
It's hot here, but not likely to stay that way, so in celebration (and freedom) it was time to pull out la shorts.

From bottom to top:
Leather gladiator sandals- Thrifted/Memphis 2007
Shorts- Old Navy
Yellow tank- Forever 21/Thrifted
White zippered hoodie thing: Hand-me-ups (hand-me-downs that come from younger sisters rather than older ones)
Necklace: a) pendant/salvaged from Michaels clearance bin, b) leather chord/stolen from moccasin kit in attic
Squinty, growly expression- Free...compliments of Monday.
