The End Of Summer Vol. 1 - Getting your skin ready for fall

Esther: I do not like Autumn.

I know it's an unforgivable sin, and there are some redeeming qualities to the changing season, like pumpkin spice lattes and cozy books, or the excuse to dress up in costumes and throw lavish parties. But despite the fact I was born in the doorway of Fall (Labor day weekend), I am Summer's child.

1) I like hot weather
2) My favorite color is any shade of the ocean
3) I could live in water
4) I am not particularly fond of lots of cloth draped all over my skin and you can get away with the least amount during Summer.

Having been cursed from birth with annoyingly sensitive skin, the changing seasons also starts up my crankiness surrounding chapped, dry, ashy skin that comes with colder weather. Ugh.

So here are some recipes I've either copied or adapted from this book Natural Beauty At Home. (starting from head to toe). They help soothe the transition from Summer to Winter.

Hair:
This stuff is more miraculous than any professional hair product I've tried (and I've tried quite a few). Leaves your hair, soft, shiny and perfect.

1 egg
1 avocado
2 T olive oil
Blend in food processor. Massage thoroughly into hair and scalp. Let sit 15 min, rinse well. (note: If you have curly/dry hair, add more olive oil, if you already have an oil problem...skip the evoo altogether)

Skin: Scrubs and Cleansers

For dry skin:
1/2 oatmeal (coarsely blended)
1 T. Honey
1 T. Olive oil
1 T. Sugar
Add milk or cream as needed for proper consistency
Scrub liberally onto face, elbows, knees and anywhere else needing cleansing and smoothing. Rinse well with tepid water and pat dry.

For oily skin:
peel from one grapefruit
2 T grapefruit juice
2 T olive oil
microwave on high long enough to make it hot (and release the essential oils in the peel), but not boiling. Add 2T cornmeal and enough plain yogurt to reach the proper consistency. Let cool completely before using as a cleansing scrub.

Skin: Heavy duty moisturizing and lotion

One word. Coconut oil

Another great option. Beeyoutiful's Vanilla Dream Body Butter.

And because I could not resist this recipe....

Mermaid Lotion (I mean really, Irish moss? Coconut oil? It just sounds magical.)

1 T. powdered Irish moss or any dried seaweed
1 C. distilled water
1/4 C. aloe vera gel
2 T. coconut oil

Mix together the Irish moss and water and let sit for 20 min. Pour the mixture into a small saucepan and boil for 20 min. Strain off the solids; you will have a clear jelly. Measure 1/4 cup of your seaweed jelly and mix with the aloe vera. Let the mixture cool completely. Pour into blender and add coconut oil. Blend slowly.

"If mermaids had a beauty secret, it would be seaweed. It is very soothing to the skin and helps skin-cell renewal. Irish moss is a red seaweed found in the North Atlantic. It contains carrageenan, which acts as a stabilizer and emulsifier."

Any other great remedies for winter skin woes?
2 sprinkles of fairy dust:
